Quick Jump

Ashtanga translates to "Eight-Limbed" yoga. This highly structured vinyasa-style practice requires dedication and focus. By maintaining a continuous flow of movement paired with deep, rhythmic breathing, practitioners cultivate an intense internal heat that purifies the muscles and organs.

This immersion focuses on the Tristana method—the union of posture (Asana), breath (Pranayama), and focal point (Drishti). Together, these three elements transform the physical practice into a deeply moving meditation.

The core of this retreat revolves around learning and memorizing the Primary Series.

Mysore Style

Experience the traditional way to learn Ashtanga. You will practice at your own pace while the teacher provides individualized physical adjustments and verbal cues to advance your practice safely.

The Tristana Method

Mastering the synchronization of Ujjayi (victorious breath), Bandhas (internal energy locks: Mula and Uddiyana), and Drishti (gazing points) to build strength and mental clarity.

Surya Namaskar A & B

Every Ashtanga practice begins with Sun Salutations A and B. This acts as the engine of the practice, establishing the rhythm of the breath and linking the vinyasas between all subsequent seated postures.

  • Build the foundation of Vinyasa flow.
  • Master the mechanics of jumping back and through.
Sun Salutation

While Ashtanga is a vigorous physical practice, our retreat is scaled to welcome practitioners of various levels who are eager to challenge themselves.

  • Physical Readiness: Some prior yoga experience is helpful. Be prepared to sweat, build stamina, and practice six days a week (resting on Moon days).
  • Mental Readiness: Bring discipline and patience. Ashtanga is a journey of repetition, requiring a commitment to showing up on the mat daily.

The Practice

Early morning Mysore style practice. 1-2 times during the retreat, this will be replaced by a traditional Led Primary Series class.

Afternoon

Technique & Philosophy

Workshops breaking down complex transitions (jump backs/throughs), inversions, and lectures on the Eight Limbs of Yoga.

Evening

Restoration

Gentle Yin yoga to balance the fiery morning practice, followed by guided meditation and Satsang.

Dive deep into Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. We will explore the literal "Eight Limbs" (Ashtau = 8, Anga = limb) that give this practice its name—Yamas, Niyamas, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi—and learn how to apply them off the mat.
